Here are some crafts to make with food that’s made right here in Atlantic Canada. Who knew food could be such fun?!
Fruity Play dough
This is an easy recipe you can do with your parents. Boil the water in an electric kettle. Less dangerous than the stovetop. The dough will be the color of the Kool-Aid mix and will smell like the Kool-Aid mix. If this play dough gets sticky after a period of not using it, just add flour and knead until it is back to its original texture.
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- ½ cup table salt
- 1½ Tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 small package unsweetened Kool-Aid (6g. pkg)
- 1 cup boiling water
Mix flour, salt, oil and Kool-Aid. Add boiling water; stir and knead until cooled and smooth. Store in a plastic Ziploc bag or airtight container (like a Mason Jar). This will lasts for a few months if stored in the fridge in a plastic bag or container.
Jewelry… good enough to eat!
What you and mommy need to have:
Shoestring licorice (long, thin), honeycomb, cheerios, fruit loops, marshmallows, big gummy treats that you can punch hole thru.
Thread the cheerios or whatever food you've chosen to string on the licorice. Tie the licorice strings together in a knot and wear your new jewelry! If you get hungry you can eat it too!
Tacky Paint
2 Tbsp light colored corn syrup
4-6 drops food coloring in any favorite color
Mix corn syrup and food coloring together in a small bowl. Blend well. You can use a paint brush, or, be creative and use your fingers!
Smelly Paints
1 Tbsp unsweetened powdered drink mix (kool aid)
1 Tbsp warm water
Mix drink mix and water together. Now your fruits will smell like real fruit after you draw and paint them. You need to let the paint dry before scratching and sniffing! This is important!
Washable crayons (Bathtub fun)
You can draw and color on the inside of the tub with the crayons you just made.
1 cup grated Ivory soap
1/4 cup warm water
4 to 6 drops food coloring
Plastic cookie cutters
Mix water, soap and food coloring together in a medium sized bowl. Stir the mixture until it begins to stiffen, if it gets to hard, ask your parents to help you. Remove the mixture from the bowl and knead until it is a very thick dough. Divide crayon mixture into plastic cookie cutters. Place the cookie cutters in the freezer for 10 minutes. Remove the crayons out of the cookie cutters and let them to dry overnight or until hard. Then you can paint the inside of the tub when you take your bath!
Giant Soap Bubbles
Bubble liquid:
3 cups water
1 cup dishwashing liquid
1/3 cup light corn syrup
Mix ingredients in a large bowl.
Homemade Bubble Maker:
To make a Giant Wand you need 2 drinking straws, and a length of string, about 4 feet long. Run the string through both straws. Knot the ends. Lay the wand down in the bubble liquid. Gently lift up the straws, one in each hand. Spread the straws apart as you lift to make a giant bubble. Wave your arms in the air and the bubble will float up and away.
Homemade Piñata
1 part water
1 part flour
Mix together into a paste.
To make a Pinata:
Have mom or dad blow up a large balloon and tie it closed. Tie up the balloon somewhere so its hanging down for you to work with. Cut or tear old newspapers into strips. Soak strips in mixture and apply them to the balloon like a plaster cast. Let one layer dry. Twist 2 pipe cleaners together. Fold them in a loop and glue the stem to bottom of the piñata using duck tape. This will be the hook to hang your piñata after. Add another layer and let dry. add two more layers, but remember to let each layer dry completely before adding another one. When the piñata is dry, burst the balloon, make a small opening at the bottom and put small candies, toys and trinkets inside. Cover the bottom hole with strong tape and paint the piñata bright funny colors. Hang up the piñata using the loop. Give your friends strong sticks to break it and share the goodies inside.
